The French Open night session on Court Philippe-Chatrier promises a thrilling encounter as Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca takes on Czech rising star Jakub Mensik for a place in the semi-finals. The match follows Alexander Zverev's victory over Rafael Jodar, which secured the German's spot in the last four.
Joao Fonseca vs Jakub Mensik
These two young talents have met only once before, in the 2024 ATP Next Gen final, a fast-four, heavily modified tournament. Fonseca emerged victorious in five tight sets, but this genuine best-of-five encounter could be a lengthy affair.
Fonseca, aged 19, has made a sensational run at Roland Garros, defeating 24-time major winner Novak Djokovic in five thrilling sets in the third round. He followed that with a four-set win over two-time finalist Casper Ruud in the fourth round. Earlier, he overcame qualifier Luka Pavlovic and Dino Prizmic in a five-set epic, coming back from two sets down.
Mensik, the 2025 Miami champion, has also endured grueling matches. He won two five-setters against Mariano Navone and Andrey Rublev, coming back from two sets down against Rublev. He also beat Alex de Minaur in four sets after losing the first set 6-0.
Alexander Zverev Reaches Semi-Finals
Alexander Zverev advanced to his fifth French Open semi-final in six years with a 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-3 victory over 19-year-old Rafael Jodar. After a competitive first set, Zverev dominated, saving a break point in the third set with back-to-back aces and closing with a forehand winner.
Zverev, seeking his first major title, said: "I want to keep going. I want to win the matches ahead. Today was a tough test, and I managed. I'm happy to be in the semi-finals, but that's it."
Jodar's breakout run ends after a remarkable debut, reaching the quarter-finals at age 19. His second grand slam appearance showed immense fight and promise for the future.
Zverev will face either Mensik or Fonseca in the semi-finals, with experience on his side as he bids for a fourth grand slam final.
