Scott Mills Steps Back as MS Society Ambassador Following BBC Dismissal
Scott Mills Steps Back as MS Society Ambassador After BBC Sacking

Scott Mills, the former BBC Radio 2 DJ, will be "stepping back" from his position as an ambassador for MS Society UK, the charity confirmed on Tuesday. This development follows his dismissal from the BBC last week, which came after revelations that the Metropolitan Police investigated Mills in 2016 over allegations of serious sexual offences involving a teenage boy under 16 between 1997 and 2000.

BBC Acknowledges Prior Knowledge of Investigation

The BBC has admitted it was aware of a police investigation into historical sexual offence allegations against Mills in 2017. However, the corporation stated it "acted decisively" after receiving "new information" in the weeks leading up to his termination. Mills, aged 53, has been an advocate for multiple sclerosis (MS) for more than a decade, initially becoming involved with MS Society UK because his mother, Sandra, was diagnosed with the progressive neurological condition.

Charity Statement Emphasises Community Focus

In a statement released on Tuesday, MS Society UK said: "Scott Mills has been a valued MS Society Ambassador for over 10 years. In light of the current news, Scott is stepping back from this role while we review the situation. We take concerns of this nature and the trust placed in us as a charity extremely seriously. Our priority is the MS community and ensuring we can continue to support everyone living with and affected by MS." Mills has served as an ambassador for the charity since 2015, actively participating in fundraising events such as MS walks and working to raise awareness about the disease.

Multiple Charities Sever Ties with Mills

In addition to MS Society UK, children's cancer charity Neuroblastoma UK has announced it will "part ways" with Mills, who had been a patron since 2021. A statement from Neuroblastoma UK read: "Following his dismissal from the BBC, Neuroblastoma UK have taken the decision to part ways with Scott Mills and he is no longer a patron of our charity." Furthermore, Mills has been dropped as the host of the BBC's new Race Across The World spin-off podcast, compounding the professional fallout from the allegations.

Mills Responds Through Legal Representation

Last Wednesday, Mills issued a statement through his lawyers, addressing the situation following his dismissal. He stated he had been subjected to "rumour and speculation" since being fired and emphasised that he "co-operated fully" with the police investigation into the historical sexual offence allegations. The statement did not provide further details on the nature of the allegations or the outcome of the investigation.

Understanding Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a disease affecting the central nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. According to the NHS, it can cause symptoms such as fatigue, numbness, vision issues, and walking difficulties. Mills' advocacy work with MS Society UK has been instrumental in fundraising and awareness campaigns, highlighting the challenges faced by those living with the condition.

The stepping back of Scott Mills from his charitable roles marks a significant shift in his public engagements, reflecting the broader impact of the allegations and his subsequent dismissal from the BBC. Both charities involved have reiterated their commitment to their respective communities, prioritising trust and support over individual affiliations.
