A Reform UK candidate has reportedly been assaulted while campaigning in Glasgow. Councillor Thomas Kerr, who is standing for the party in the city, was allegedly attacked while delivering leaflets in Shettleston, east Glasgow, on Friday afternoon.
Party Blames Opponents' Rhetoric
Reform UK Scotland condemned the incident and pointed the finger at the language used by rival parties. A spokesperson said: 'What has been witnessed on the streets of Glasgow today against Thomas Kerr was beyond unacceptable – free speech is important, but no politician should be subjected to violence while out campaigning.'
The spokesperson added: 'The language of our opponents – describing candidates as “racist”, “fascist”, or “far-right” – is having real life consequences and is not productive to promoting healthy democracy.'
Police Investigation Underway
Police Scotland confirmed they were alerted to an assault on a man at Strowan Road around 2:15pm on Friday. Officers stated that another man will be reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with the incident.
Thomas Kerr, a councillor and Holyrood candidate, was pictured earlier with Reform UK Scotland leader Malcolm Offord in front of the party's election van in Glasgow. The attack has sparked renewed debate about the tone of political discourse in Scotland.
