In October 2001, we reported on questions regarding his suitability as Britain's roving trade ambassador. During an official visit to New York, he was observed dining with a supermodel, and after she displayed coolness, he reportedly shifted his attention to a group of 'flashily dressed young Russian women'. Our coverage also highlighted that he was accompanied by a new female private secretary, appointed specifically to curb Andrew's tendency for late nights with young women. These events are believed to have occurred at the Manhattan townhouse of Ghislaine Maxwell.
Early Warnings and Ongoing Monitoring
Almost every element of the unfolding disaster that we now recognise was already apparent at that time. Over the years, this newspaper has continued to track the embarrassing and concerning exploits of the former prince. Notably, on February 27, 2011, we published the significant photograph of Virginia Giuffre (then known as Roberts) with Andrew and Ms Maxwell, an image that has persistently troubled him and Buckingham Palace ever since.

Now, in 2026, seven years have passed since those warnings. What actions have been taken? Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on his birthday on suspicion of misconduct in public office. King Charles recently stated that 'the law must take its course' following his brother's detention.
It may be argued that the late Queen Elizabeth II felt protective towards her wayward son, which might have shielded him from criticism prior to her death in 2022. This was a mistake by the late Queen, though some find it difficult to blame her for it. Even her admirers must acknowledge that her tolerance of his boorish and unappealing lifestyle was an unfortunate and damaging lapse in an otherwise exemplary record as Head of State.

Nevertheless, matters have been allowed to deteriorate for far too long since Charles ascended to the throne. Brothers are not typically sentimental about each other, and Charles has always been acutely aware that the monarchy is perpetually at risk and requires careful protection. Yet, the events of recent days have dealt a severe blow to the Crown's prestige and reputation, from which recovery will be exceedingly challenging.
Was it truly impossible for the authorities to act more swiftly and decisively before reaching this lamentable situation?
