Made In Chelsea Star Ollie Locke's Breakdown Over £45k Unpaid Rent Scandal

Made In Chelsea star Ollie Locke has revealed he suffered a complete breakdown and feels "humiliated" after being forced to leave his west London home over an unpaid rent bill that has ballooned to £45,000. The 39-year-old reality television personality told the Daily Mail he is in "the lowest place he's ever been" both mentally and physically.

Mental Health Crisis and Physical Symptoms

Ollie described experiencing severe depression and a breakdown triggered by the financial scandal. "I feel horrendous," he confessed. "Physically, I have been the most depressed I have been in my entire life. This has pushed me to have a breakdown which has been incredibly hard."

The stress has manifested physically with Ollie revealing he is "absolutely covered in psoriasis," which he identifies as his stress response. He added that seeing people whispering about him in public "breaks my heart" and his mental health has gone to "a dark place."

The Unpaid Rent Debacle

In February, Ollie and his husband Gareth, 37, were forced to leave their four-bedroom, four-bathroom Chelsea home after failing to pay three months' rent amounting to £25,000. The original debt has since escalated to £45,000 with the addition of late fees and legal costs.

The couple had been paying over £7,000 per month for the £4 million property just off the King's Road, where they often filmed scenes for Made In Chelsea and its spin-off Beyond Chelsea. Despite their glamorous television image, Gareth claims they are a "normal family" who budget carefully for their two-year-old twins, Apollo and Cosima.

Tenant Complications and Blame Game

Complicating matters, the couple had been living with a tenant whose rent was paid directly to them throughout her stay. The tenant, named on the tenancy agreement alongside Ollie and Gareth, paid her rent in full each month believing the money was being passed to the landlord.

She later discovered the payments had not been used to cover the rent and instead claims they were diverted to "fund the couple's luxury lifestyle." Despite meeting her obligations, she is now being pursued by debt collectors for the outstanding sum due to her name being on the contract.

Gareth insists there was actually a fourth lodger who agreed to pay their share but ultimately left them in the lurch, though this claim has been refuted. He attributes their predicament to "cashflow issues" stemming from the freelance nature of their work as influencers.

Financial Reality Versus Television Image

Ollie emphasized the disparity between his television persona and financial reality. "People always say about reality TV, why has Made In Chelsea lasted for such a long time?" he said. "It's because the background is Chelsea, they make everything look so beautiful... but we're brought along. That's the background. That's what makes it glamorous and glitzy."

He insists that unlike some co-stars who come from wealthy families, he hasn't taken money from his parents since he was a teenager and has worked hard for everything. "I imagine people think I'm a multi-millionaire, when it's not the reality," Ollie revealed.

Business Troubles and Industry Changes

The financial struggles come amid broader business difficulties for Ollie, who has quietly shut down four companies since 2017. His remaining firm, Laughing London Limited, now has just £109 left in the business despite once boasting reserves of around £122,000. He has borrowed £144,000 from the company, and the latest accounts are two years overdue.

Both Ollie and Gareth point to changes in the television industry as contributing to their financial pressures. "The TV industry has gone into such a horrible place," Ollie lamented. "People don't have the same budgets, and we're not able to do anything. We were in that last little bit of it."

He noted that cast members were paid "bugger all" to appear on Made In Chelsea, forcing them to pursue endorsements and other projects. "Sadly, you have to win I'm A Celeb to get on TV now," he added, referencing co-star Sam Thompson's 2023 victory on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

Commitment to Repayment and Future Plans

Despite their difficulties, both Ollie and Gareth insist they intend to repay the money owed. "We are 100 per cent going to pay the rent," Ollie stated. "The landlord knows that everyone knows that."

Gareth dismissed suggestions of bankruptcy, saying they could arrange a payment plan instead. "That would never be a thing because we can - there are other things we can do and move money around to pay it," he explained. "Worst case scenario we could set up a payment plan so it would never be a thing to think about bankruptcy."

The couple has since moved to a new property with similar rental costs, attributing their cashflow problems to irregular income from social media and television projects with 90-120 day payment terms. "Unless you have a consistent flow, that's a very risky way to live," Gareth noted.

Contrasting Public Image and Private Reality

The financial revelations came as a shock to fans who had seen the couple enjoying luxury experiences just before the story broke. They kicked off the year with a Barbados cruise courtesy of P&O Cruises as part of a brand partnership, posing with TOWIE star Lydia Bright with champagne in hand.

Days before the rent scandal emerged, Ollie attended a friend's 40th birthday celebration at a luxurious country manor, sharing on Instagram: "If I'm honest, I'm going inside to drink champagne by the fireplace... icons only."

Gareth emphasized the curated nature of their social media presence: "The number of people who think that Instagram is real life is madness. It is an edited version of your life. The expectation that we have this luxury lifestyle - it doesn't exist."

Ollie concluded with a message about resilience: "We all go through these bumps financially, especially with the cost of living becoming so expensive and so obscene. We're a family of four, and we need to feed each other and try to keep up as much as we can."
