Mum Slammed for Naming Twins Paige and Gaige

A mother has ignited a heated debate online after revealing the names of her twin daughters, with one moniker being described as 'charming' while the other has been widely criticised as a 'made-up' creation. The American parent took to social media to celebrate her children's academic achievements, sharing a photograph of their grade point average (GPA) results. However, instead of focusing on their grades, many commenters became fixated on the girls' names.

The Viral Post

The mum wrote in her post: 'Paige has a 2.5 GPA and Gaige has 1.45. I'm just saying pat myself on the back - single mom strong type s***.' The post garnered approximately 1,800 likes, but one X user expressed confusion, asking: 'You named your kids Paige and Gaige?'

The post subsequently found its way onto Reddit's 'tragedeigh' thread, a forum named after an internet term describing 'a given name that has been deliberately misspelled or completely made up to appear more unique than it actually is.'

Social Media Reactions

One Reddit user questioned: 'Why is she proud of her kids doing poorly in school?' Another speculated: 'Well, maybe the mum did even worse. I mean, Gage is a name, she just really wanted it to match Paige.' A third commenter added: 'My niece is dating a guy named Caige. I've strongly discouraged the relationship based on his name alone.'

A further user joked: 'I can gauge that Paige is the gifted one. Gaige is going to need to take a page out of Paige's book.' Another wrote: 'I am not shocked that Gaige is nearly failing out, kid's life has been a nightmare on the roll call sheet since day one of school.'

A teacher commented: 'Any parent patting themselves on the back for their kid's 1.45 and even 2.5 GPA is literally saying, I am so proud they are dumb.' Another user agreed: 'I'm honestly more concerned by the pride in such low GPAs than the names.'

Understanding GPA

In the United States, GPA is the standard measure of academic achievement, with 4.0 broadly equating to an A, 3.0 to a B, 2.0 to a C, 1.0 to a D, and 0.0 to an F. Using this grading system, Paige's 2.5 works out at roughly a C+, suggesting she is passing her coursework. Gaige, meanwhile, is achieving somewhere around a D+ or D, which is considered a 'very low' pass. Any pupil scoring below 60% receives a failing grade, at which point their GPA falls into the 0.0 bracket.
