A 49-year-old woman has been charged with causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving following a tragic incident at a Wimbledon school in July 2023. Claire Freemantle is accused of driving a Land Rover into The Study Prep school, resulting in the deaths of two eight-year-old girls, Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, on the last day of the summer term.
Charges and Court Appearance
Freemantle's lawyers have confirmed that she will plead not guilty to the charges when she appears at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 16 June. The decision to charge her comes after significant criticism from the victims' families regarding the Metropolitan Police's initial investigation.
Investigation Controversy
Earlier, the Metropolitan Police had decided not to charge the driver, citing an epileptic seizure as the cause of the crash. This decision was met with strong objections from the families of Nuria and Selena. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is currently investigating four serving officers, including a commander, for alleged racism and gross misconduct in their handling of the case.
Family Reactions
The families of the victims have expressed relief that charges have finally been brought, but they continue to seek justice and accountability. The case has highlighted concerns about police conduct and the handling of incidents involving vulnerable individuals.
