Helena Bonham Carter has been seen in public for the first time since her abrupt departure from the fourth season of The White Lotus after just nine days of filming. The 59-year-old actress exited the hit HBO series due to reported creative differences with the show's director, Mike White.
Helena Bonham Carter Spotted in North London
After returning to the UK from filming in the South of France, Bonham Carter was photographed in North London on Tuesday while refuelling her car. The Harry Potter star wore a striking long pink patterned fur coat with bold red edging on the collar and cuffs, layered over a floral dress and a green cardigan. She completed her look with chunky beige trainers and styled her long hair in a messy updo.
Departure from The White Lotus
TV executives have stated that Bonham Carter mutually agreed to leave the show due to disagreements over her character. However, speculation has arisen suggesting a possible clash with co-star Sandra Bernhard. A source claimed, 'The word is Helena left because of a clash with Sandra Bernhard.' Bonham Carter's representatives denied this, noting that the two had never met, though they declined to elaborate further.
Bonham Carter was the first major star cast in the fourth season, which also includes Steve Coogan and Heather Graham. The series, an anthology set in luxury resorts, will primarily take place at the Airelles Chateau de la Messardiere in Saint-Tropez, France.
Replacement Announced
Laura Dern has been announced as Bonham Carter's replacement, though she will portray a new character rather than the one originally written for Bonham Carter. Dern has a long-standing working relationship with showrunner Mike White, having starred in his directorial debut Year of the Dog and the HBO series Enlightened.
HBO released a statement confirming the departure: 'With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set. The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks.' The network expressed sadness over the split but hopes to collaborate with Bonham Carter on future projects.
Fans reacted with disappointment on social media, with comments such as 'Oh my she’s the one I’m looking forward to seeing in this season!!!!' and 'I’m depressed.'
The fourth season will centre on the Cannes Film Festival and feature a cast including Kumail Nanjiani, Ari Graynor, Chloe Bennet, Max Greenfield, and AJ Michalka, among others.
