Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein's flirty promotion for their new Netflix rom-com Office Romance is 'just for the cameras', according to a body language expert. Judi James analysed the pair's recent London premiere appearance and concluded that their cosy display was a performance, not a sign of a real off-screen relationship.
Red Carpet Display
At the London premiere, the singer, 56, and actor, 46, shared looks, close conversations, and physical touches. However, Judi James argued that these signals were cultivated for the cameras. 'In what looks like a cultivated moment for the cameras, J-Lo and Brett provide one 'loving look' of exchanged eye contact on the red carpet, but that 'moment' doesn't seem to define any authentic romantic aura,' she said.
James noted that Brett appeared under pressure to perfect his loving gaze. 'His smile comes with clenched teeth, as though he feels under pressure to get it perfectly right for her,' she added. The expert suggested that their connection oozed respect and gentlemanly conduct rather than romance.
Avoidance of Touch
James highlighted moments where the duo avoided touch. 'When we look more closely at their body language, there are times they appear to avoid touch and proximity rather than encourage or enjoy it,' she said. Video footage from inside the premiere showed Brett walking ahead and offering a hand, but Lopez emphatically avoided flesh-to-flesh contact, clasping his wrist over his jacket cuff instead.
As they walked on stage, Lopez moved her hand to the crook of his arm for a formal touch ritual. Once at the interview spot, Brett put his left hand in his pocket to avoid touch, and Lopez clasped her hands in front of her torso, maintaining a wide spatial gap. Brett even turned his back on her and moved away towards the interviewer.
Eye Contact and Off-Camera Behaviour
James analysed their eye contact, noting that Lopez ended with a rapid double blink rather than a lingering look of love. When they chatted while another person was interviewed, Lopez turned to wave and walk off, and Brett had to point her in the right direction. Off-camera, they stopped touching, with Lopez using her security team for support instead of Brett. 'They look friendly but polite and respectful, without any signs of a simmering off-screen romance,' James concluded.
Denials of Romance
When asked directly on The Today Show if they were dating, Lopez replied vaguely, prompting the interviewers to push for a straight answer. She then clarified, 'We are not dating,' and Goldstein added, 'Correct.' This is the only time the pair have blatantly denied being a couple, despite fan speculation about a real romance or showmance, a common practice for stars of upcoming romantic films.
