A man has been jailed after he killed his passenger in a head-on collision on a dual carriageway during a police pursuit.
Details of the Incident
Kane Farragher, 24, was under the influence of drugs when he drove his BMW south on the northbound carriageway of the A19. Shortly before 3am on March 1, his vehicle smashed into an oncoming car, killing 24-year-old passenger Taylor Jenkins. He had reached speeds of 136mph.
Ms Jenkins died at the scene of the crash, Northumbria Police said. Officers had been pursuing Farragher after he failed to pull over when they signalled for him to stop.
Court Proceedings
Farragher, from Birkenhead, Merseyside, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on March 31, where he admitted offences including causing death by dangerous driving. Today, he was jailed for 12 years and nine months.
Farragher's BMW crashed into a VW Sharan, leaving the driver requiring hospital treatment, but his injuries were not serious.
Tribute from the Victim's Family
Ms Jenkins's family paid tribute, saying: 'Taylor was deeply loved and will be missed more than words can ever express. Her kindness, laughter, and beautiful spirit touched so many lives, and her memory will live on in all of us. During this incredibly difficult time, we ask for privacy and compassion as we grieve. We are grateful for the overwhelming support and kindness shown to our family.'
Police Investigation
Northumbria Police referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over the crash.
