British wife screams 'I love you' as death row husband executed

A British law school graduate broke down in tears as she watched her husband, a death row rapper, being executed by lethal injection in a Texas prison. Tiana Krasniqi, 31, pressed herself against the viewing chamber window and screamed 'I love you' as James Broadnax, 37, was put to death at 6.47 pm local time.

A Tragic Love Story

The couple married just a fortnight ago in a brief 20-minute ceremony at the Allan B. Polunsky Unit in Texas. Tiana, who is from Lewisham, London, first contacted Broadnax as part of her legal studies for a master's degree in international human rights law at the University of Law. She was researching racial disparities in US capital punishment for her dissertation.

Within a few months of corresponding, Tiana revealed that she fell in love with the inmate. 'We kind of realised that it was more than a study, but it was never intentional,' she said. Broadnax initially told her that a relationship was 'not realistic' given his impending execution, but Tiana persisted. 'He's just very intelligent, very well-spoken, very respectful, he is just your normal person,' she said.

The Crime and Controversy

Broadnax was convicted of the 2008 murders of Stephen Swan and Matthew Butler, two Christian music producers, in a recording studio car park in Dallas, Garland. However, his cousin Demarius Cummings, who was jailed for life without parole for the same crime, later claimed he was the actual shooter. In a prison video, Cummings said, 'I'm really gonna tell it like it's supposed to be told, that it was me, that I was the killer.'

Lawyers for Broadnax argued that forensic evidence supported Cummings's confession, noting that Cummings's DNA—not Broadnax's—was found on the murder weapon and in one victim's pocket. Despite a last-ditch appeal, officials proceeded with the execution at the state penitentiary in Huntsville.

Legal Battles and Appeals

Tiana moved to Houston, Texas, to enlist a team of lawyers to submit appeals against the execution. The case drew support from rappers Travis Scott, T.I., and Killer Mike, who filed briefs to the Supreme Court. However, the court rejected the final appeal just hours before the execution. Texas officials dismissed the cousin's confession as 'questionable new evidence,' and the victim's family opposed any delay. Theresa Butler, mother of Matthew Butler, said, 'This so-called confession from Cummings is just a stall tactic by Broadnax's desperate defense team. It's all a lie.'

The Execution

On the day of the execution, Tiana watched helplessly as Broadnax was administered a fatal dose of pentobarbital. She pressed herself against the viewing window with her arms outstretched and had to be helped out of the prison afterward. In a statement released after his death, Tiana and his legal team said, 'James was a caring, thoughtful, spiritual, and deeply intelligent person who positively impacted all who came to know him. He will be missed by all of us and by his family and many friends.'

Broadnax's Final Words

Hours before his death, Broadnax's legal team shared a statement from him: 'I would like to thank everybody for their love, prayers and support, legal and otherwise, and for all of the effort of fighting for justice in this case. It doesn't go unnoticed, and we thank you.' He had previously expressed remorse for his role in the robbery, saying, 'I wish I could show them my soul, so they could see just how sorry I am.'

Tiana, who has a daughter in the UK, said she misses her child but felt compelled to fight for Broadnax's life. 'Nobody agrees with the relationship. And I don't expect them to. It's not conventional,' she said.
