Taraji P. Henson Pays Tribute to Black Icons Through Fashion at BET Awards

Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson paid homage to legendary black women through her wardrobe while hosting the 21st BET Awards on Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The 50-year-old actress, born in Washington D.C., donned multiple costumes throughout the night, channelling icons such as Diana Ross, Tina Turner, and Betty Boop.

Henson's first look featured an afro wig, sparkly catsuit, and voluminous cape reminiscent of Diana Ross. She later appeared as Betty Boop with a curly wig and red pout, which also evoked Dorothy Dandridge. A gold mini-dress, black pumps, and wild wig unmistakably paid tribute to Tina Turner.

The 'Empire' alum also impersonated H.E.R., hilariously attempting to play multiple instruments at once. The 24-year-old Grammy and Oscar winner, born Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, later performed drums, guitar, and vocals during the ceremony.

On stage, Henson declared: 'Tonight you gonna get 100 percent of our full blackness... It's 2021 and we are celebrating the year of the black woman. Period.' She added: 'Celebrating black women isn't a fad or a trend. It's a forever mood.'

Backstage, Henson performed an impromptu song and dance, anticipating her first drink in two weeks. She joked on Instagram: 'Cause I wasn't drinking or eating s***. They got me in Band-Aids!' Later, she attended an afterparty at BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood, wearing a raven pixie wig and sequin LBD with a matching face mask.
