BBC Question Time Erupts as Tory MP Atkins Clashes with Reform's Yusuf

Tonight's edition of BBC Question Time descended into chaos as Conservative MP Victoria Atkins and Reform UK's Zia Yusuf engaged in a heated exchange over the banning of pro-Palestinian marches. The debate, hosted in Maidenhead, Berkshire, featured host Fiona Bruce alongside Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds, Conservative MP Victoria Atkins, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper, Reform UK's Zia Yusuf, and Green Party Co-deputy Leader Rachel Millward.

Golders Green Attack Sparks Debate

The first topic of discussion focused on protecting the Jewish community following the horrific attack in Golders Green earlier this week. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Jewish community of Golders Green, North London, just yards from where four ambulances were torched by arsonists last month. A 45-year-old British national born in Somalia was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He was taken to hospital but has since been discharged and remains in police custody. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner confirmed the suspect has "violence and mental health issues," and the attack is being investigated by counter-terrorism officers.

Two men, aged 76 and 34—identified locally as Moshe Shine and Shloime Rand—suffered serious stab wounds and remain in stable condition in hospital.

Clash Over Marches

During the programme, Victoria Atkins clashed with Zia Yusuf over whether pro-Palestinian marches should be banned. Atkins stated, "These marches, as we have all acknowledged, have risen since the horrific events on October 7." Yusuf interrupted, insisting he needed to correct her, arguing that her suggestion the marches were not happening before October 7 was "simply not true." As Yusuf attempted to talk over her, Atkins retorted, "Zia, we've let you speak. Zia, let me speak, please, let me speak."

Atkins continued, "What we know from these marches is that Jewish people are afraid to walk the streets of our capital city and elsewhere when they're happening because these marches make them feel deeply unsafe. I am calling for the government to take action."

Green Party Deputy Leader Rachel Millward then stated that the protests were not antisemitic, prompting host Fiona Bruce to note there was disagreement on that point. Bruce said, "There are differences of opinion on that, so I'm going to park that there for now."

Terror Threat Raised

Following the Golders Green attack, the terror threat level has been raised to "severe," with the Home Office stating that another atrocity is "highly likely." BBC Question Time returns on Friday, May 8, in London.
