BBC Question Time Chaos: Atkins Fumes 'Let Me Speak'

BBC Question Time descended into chaos on Thursday evening as Reform UK's Zia Yusuf and Conservative MP Victoria Atkins engaged in a heated exchange over banning pro-Palestinian marches. The debate, held in Maidenhead, Berkshire, was hosted by Fiona Bruce and featured a panel including Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds, Conservative MP Victoria Atkins, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats Daisy Cooper, Reform UK's Zia Yusuf, and Co-deputy leader of the Green Party Rachel Millward.

Golders Green Attack Sparks Debate

The first topic of the evening addressed how to protect the Jewish community following the horrific attack in Golders Green, North London, earlier this week. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, just yards from where four ambulances were torched by arsonists last month. A 45-year-old British national, born in Somalia, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He was initially taken to hospital but has since been discharged and is in police custody. Police continue to question the suspect, who the Met Commissioner said has "violence and mental health issues," and confirmed the attack is being investigated by counter-terrorism officers.

Two men, aged 76 and 34—identified locally as Moshe Shine and Shloime Rand—suffered serious stab wounds and were recovering in hospital last night, with police confirming they remain in a stable condition.

Clash Over Pro-Palestinian Marches

During the discussion, Victoria Atkins clashed with Zia Yusuf over the issue of banning pro-Palestinian marches. Atkins stated, "These marches, as we have all acknowledged, have risen since the horrific events on October 7." Yusuf interrupted, insisting that her suggestion that the marches were not happening before October 7 was "simply not true." As he attempted to talk over her, Atkins retorted, "Zia, we've let you speak. Zia, let me speak, please, let me speak."

Atkins continued, "What we know from these marches is that Jewish people are afraid to walk the streets of our capital city and elsewhere when they're happening because these marches make them feel deeply unsafe. I am calling for the government to take action."

Rachel Millward, Deputy leader of the Green Party, then stated that the protests were not antisemitic, prompting host Fiona Bruce to note the disagreement. Bruce said, "There are differences of opinion on that, so I'm going to park that there for now."

Terror Threat Level Raised

The terror threat level has been raised to "severe" following the Golders Green attack, as the Home Office indicated that another atrocity is "highly likely." BBC Question Time returns on Thursday, May 7.
