Seventy-two members of the European Parliament have written to 27 EU football associations, urging them to demand a formal FIFA investigation into the decision to overturn Folarin Balogun's World Cup suspension. The lawmakers allege that Donald Trump's political interference breached FIFA's own rules on neutrality.
Background of the Scandal
The controversy erupted ahead of the USA v Belgium round-of-16 match. Balogun, a USMNT striker, had been dismissed during the round-of-32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina for a challenge deemed harsh at the time. He was expected to serve a one-match suspension against Belgium, but FIFA overturned the ban. Donald Trump claimed responsibility for the U-turn, stating his involvement prompted FIFA to reconsider. Although FIFA denied any political interference, Trump's assertion sparked allegations of corruption.
European Lawmakers' Letter
In a letter reported on July 10, 2026, the MEPs expressed deep concern about the decision-making process. They wrote: "In light of the decision taken on Sunday to suspend the implementation of an automatic one-match suspension, we feel that it is time for European Football Associations, all of whom are member associations of FIFA, to intervene and ask that FIFA investigate the aforementioned decision-making processes. FIFA's statutory rules and code of ethics provide a very clear basis for member associations to intervene and demand an investigation."
Allegations of Political Neutrality Violations
The lawmakers argued that FIFA violated its own regulations on political neutrality. They cited Article 4(2) of the FIFA Statutes, which states FIFA remains neutral in politics and religion, and Article 15 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, which requires all football officials to remain politically neutral and provides sanctions for violations. The letter urged associations to support an investigation into Infantino's links to Trump, adding: "Any investigation must now include scrutiny of the decision-making process surrounding FIFA's decision to rescind the ban imposed on a member of the US men's national team."
Impact on the Tournament
Balogun played against Belgium but could not prevent a comprehensive 4-1 defeat, eliminating the USMNT. Despite the team's exit, pressure on FIFA President Gianni Infantino continues. The Norwegian Football Federation has also called for an investigation. The tournament proceeds with Spain facing Belgium on Friday, and England vs Norway and Argentina vs Colombia scheduled for Saturday.
