UK to be at 'heart of Europe' as Starmer announces EU summit

Keir Starmer declared that Britain will be at the “heart of Europe” as he announced a pivotal UK-EU summit scheduled for next month in Brussels. The Prime Minister confirmed July 22 as the date for the gathering while attending the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France.

Starmer's Political Future

Mr. Starmer is facing a critical period for his political career, with Andy Burnham expected to challenge his leadership if he succeeds in the Makerfield by-election on Thursday. Downing Street insisted that the Prime Minister remains “committed to the task” of delivering for the British people, with a spokesperson stating: “The Prime Minister is committed to his task of delivering for the British people. He's been very clear about his views on his position. You've got him on record on that, and nothing has changed.”

Resetting Relations with Europe

Announcing the summit, Mr. Starmer emphasized his government’s dedication to improving ties with the European Union. “My Labour Government is delivering on our promise to reset our relationship and put Britain at the heart of Europe,” he said. “Together we will tackle the cost of living, boost jobs and create opportunities for young people.”

Youth Mobility Deal

A youth mobility agreement is expected to be finalized at the summit, allowing citizens under 30 from the UK and EU member states to live, work, and study in each other’s countries. However, negotiations remain contentious over tuition fees for EU students in England, the UK’s demand for a cap on participants, and uncertainties regarding visa issuance for British youngsters by European nations.

Downing Street added: “We're working together with the EU to create a balanced youth experience scheme, which will create new opportunities for young people to live, work, study, and travel, but as I say, those discussions continue. The PM has always been clear that he'll act in the UK's national interest.”

Brexit Debate Reignited

The Brexit debate has resurfaced in recent weeks after leadership contender Wes Streeting suggested the possibility of rejoining the EU. Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester Mayor, previously dismissed calls to reverse Brexit, warning that Britain would be stuck in a “permanent rut” if it re-engaged in such arguments. However, Burnham appeared to soften his stance after expressing hope at Labour’s annual conference in September that the UK would rejoin the EU within his lifetime.

During the G7 summit, Mr. Starmer held separate meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. Mr. Costa remarked: “Close EU–UK cooperation is essential for our shared European security, resilience, and prosperity. We are working closely together to make our upcoming second summit in Brussels on 22 July a success.”
