The new guidelines, announced on Friday, stipulate that acting roles must be 'demonstrably performed by humans with their consent' and that screenplays must be 'human-authored' to qualify for awards consideration.
AI Performances Banned
This decision effectively renders AI-generated performances ineligible for Oscars. A prominent example is the posthumous role of Val Kilmer in the film As Deep as the Grave, which utilized AI to recreate the actor's likeness and voice. Under the new rules, such performances will not be considered for any acting category.
Other Key Changes
Beyond the AI restrictions, the Academy introduced several other modifications. Actors can now be nominated for multiple performances in the same category, allowing for recognition of versatility within a single awards season. Additionally, the eligibility criteria for international films have been expanded: films that win top awards at major festivals will automatically qualify for the Best International Film category.
The Best International Film Oscar will now credit the film and its director, rather than the nominating country, shifting the focus from national representation to artistic achievement. All new rules will take effect for the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 14, 2027.
