Gary Neville's Media Venture Acquires Mark Goldbridge's YouTube Channels
In a significant move within the sports media landscape, Gary Neville's company, The Overlap, has announced the acquisition of Mark Goldbridge's popular YouTube channels, The United Stand and That's Football. The deal is reported to be worth a substantial seven-figure sum, marking a major expansion for Neville's media enterprise.
Details of the Acquisition and Channel Background
The Overlap, co-founded by the former Manchester United defender in 2021, is best known for its weekly podcast Stick to Football, featuring football personalities like Roy Keane, Ian Wright, and Jamie Carragher. Earlier this year, the company sold a majority stake to media giant Global, and this purchase represents its foray into the YouTube domain. Goldbridge's channels boast a combined subscriber base of 3.7 million, with Goldbridge, whose real name is Brent Di Cesare, having built a prominent social media presence through his passionate and often humorous rants about football, particularly Manchester United.
Past Criticisms and New Collaboration
The partnership is particularly intriguing given the history between the two figures. Goldbridge has previously criticised Neville in his content, while Neville has expressed disdain for "those bloody YouTubers." However, both parties have now set aside their differences, focusing on the lucrative opportunities in the booming YouTube media market. Neville commented to Broadcast Sport, stating, "Mark has criticised me more than most, but we don't have to agree. He knows what he does and he's got to carry on criticising me. That's how the world works."
Rebranding and Future Plans
According to reports from The Guardian, the deal will involve rebranding the channels with new content formats. The United Stand will feature Stick To United, a show with ex-players and journalists, and The Daily United, a news programme. Neville revealed that The Overlap plans to acquire more YouTube channels in the future, saying, "[We] need to go into discussions with other channels, but we're not in a rush. We'll wait for the right opportunities in the next six, 12, 18 months. I don't think of it as a media empire." He added that the impetus for expansion came after Manchester United's sacking of Ruben Amorim in early January, following a meeting with Goldbridge the previous month.
Vision and Statements from Both Parties
Neville emphasised the strategic vision behind the acquisition, stating, "We are building what we believe will become one of the most exciting independent football communities in the world – one that gives fans direct, personality-led content. The United Stand and That's Football are two of the best-known football channels on YouTube, and our intention is to develop them into the most compelling Manchester United and football news channels in the market." Goldbridge expressed pride in his decade-long work building the channels and optimism for the future, noting, "This deal is about what comes next. The Overlap has the ambition, the credibility, and the resources to help me take what I do to the next level."
