Donald Trump, at 78 years old the oldest US president at inauguration, is known for his late-night social media activity, which suggests he gets less than five hours of sleep per night. His physician, Navy doctor Ronny Jackson, told reporters in 2018 that Trump sleeps four to five hours a night, adding that he has likely been that way his whole life. This places him among the 1% of 'short sleepers' who thrive on minimal rest.
While the average person needs seven to eight hours of sleep, Professor Kevin Morgan of Loughborough University's sleep research centre notes there is no optimum amount, only a need to sleep enough to feel refreshed. Trump's sleep habits are part of a broader lifestyle that includes a diet heavy on McDonald's and Diet Coke.
Trump's go-to McDonald's order, according to former campaign officials, is two Big Macs, two Filet-O-Fish, and a chocolate malted milkshake. He has cited cleanliness and safety as reasons for his fast food preference, telling CNN: 'I like cleanliness and I think you're better off going there than maybe someplace that you have no idea where the food's coming from.'
Despite the high calorie count—around 2,430 for a typical meal—Trump has claimed to be in excellent health. His former doctor Harold Bornstein once wrote that Trump had 'extraordinary' physical strength and stamina, and 'astonishingly excellent' blood pressure. However, nutritionists warn that a daily diet of McDonald's and Diet Coke lacks key nutrients and is high in saturated fat, sodium, and calories.
