Sir Keir Starmer has indicated he wants Andy Burnham to play a big part in the Labour Government, hinting at a possible Cabinet role for the Greater Manchester Mayor. Burnham is contesting the Makerfield by-election on Thursday, aiming to return to Westminster as an MP, and has expressed ambitions for the Labour leadership.
Starmer's Stance on Leadership
On Wednesday, Sir Keir reiterated he has no intention of stepping down and plans to confront any challenge. He faces a threat from former health secretary Wes Streeting, who has suggested initiating a leadership contest as early as next week.
In comments to Sky News, Starmer said: Andy is a great asset. And, yes, I want him to have a big role in government.
Potential Cabinet Invitation
When asked if he would invite Burnham to join the Cabinet if he wins the by-election, the Prime Minister responded: Well, I'm sure I'll talk to Andy after the weekend, of course I will. I've spoken to him many times in recent weeks.
Starmer noted that attention would shift to a mayoral by-election if Burnham becomes an MP, calling it one of the biggest by-elections Labour has faced.
Leadership Challenge Denied
Sir Keir dismissed the idea of a challenge, stating: I don't think there should be a challenge. History shows that isn't a successful way for a government to behave. But if there is a challenge, I intend to fight.
Meanwhile, Wes Streeting claimed he has support from 80 MPs for a contest, accusing Starmer of not listening to the party or his Cabinet.
