A British tourist has recounted a harrowing experience in Bali, where he was drugged, assaulted, and robbed of £1,800 while travelling alone. Jamie Lathan, a 36-year-old rigger from England, said the incident unfolded after a night out at a nightclub in Denpasar.
How the Attack Unfolded
According to Lathan, he met an Indonesian woman at the La Covida nightclub who bought him multiple drinks. Shortly after, he began feeling unwell and believes his drinks were spiked. He was then struck from the side and taken outside, where others were allegedly waiting. The woman persuaded him to get on the back of a motorbike, and they rode to his accommodation.
“I was falling asleep on the bike,” Lathan said. “When we got back to mine, I woke up fully clothed.” He estimates that around four hours passed before he lost consciousness completely. Upon waking, he discovered that £1,800 had been taken from his bag.
Medical Aftermath
The attack occurred on 9 May. Lathan visited a hospital the following day, where he received treatment for two head wounds. One cut required 16 stitches, while another above his eyebrow needed seven stitches. He described the experience as “the worst feeling of my life knowing I was on my own and couldn’t do anything because I’d been spiked.”
Lack of Support
Lathan did not report the incident to the police. Instead, he returned to the nightclub the next day to request CCTV footage, but staff refused to provide it. His hotel receptionist attempted to help, but Lathan has received no response since. “I’ve heard nothing from anyone, not even a sorry,” he said.
The ordeal has affected his confidence in travelling alone. “It affected me travelling on my own,” he added. His family and friends back home were left deeply worried after hearing what happened during his solo trip.
