Tensions have exploded once again in Minneapolis following a second shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in a matter of days. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, has ignited fresh protests and drawn sharp criticism from the city's mayor.
What Happened: The Chase and The Confrontation
According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the events unfolded at approximately 7pm on 14 January 2026. Federal agents attempted to stop a man they believed to be an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela following a car pursuit.
The DHS claims the man crashed into a parked vehicle while trying to evade arrest and then fled on foot. Officials state that when agents attempted to apprehend him, he resisted. At this point, two individuals emerged from a nearby apartment armed with a snow shovel and a broom handle.
The situation escalated rapidly. The DHS alleges the three people then "ambushed and attacked" the ICE officer. In response, "fearing for his life and safety," the officer fired what are described as defensive shots. One round struck the initial suspect in the leg.
Aftermath and Official Reaction
Both the wounded man and the ICE officer were transported to hospital. Authorities confirmed the man sustained non-life threatening injuries. The officer was also treated, though the extent of their injuries was not immediately detailed.
The shooting has provoked a furious response from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. He directly accused ICE agents of "creating chaos" across Minnesota, referencing this event and the recent killing of Renee Good which occurred just days earlier.
A City on Edge: Protests and Police Response
The news of another ICE-related shooting acted as a catalyst for immediate public anger. Protests erupted in Minneapolis on Wednesday night, with demonstrators gathering to voice their outrage.
Law enforcement responded to the crowds by deploying tear gas and pepper balls in an attempt to disperse protesters. The scenes of conflict further heightened the sense of crisis in a city already grieving and on high alert.
This latest episode underscores the deep-seated tensions surrounding federal immigration enforcement actions in local communities and raises serious questions about the use of force and its impact on public order.
