Police Probe The Cure Guitarist Perry Bamonte's Death as 'Unexplained'
Police Investigate The Cure Guitarist Perry Bamonte's Death

Police have initiated an investigation into the death of Perry Bamonte, the renowned guitarist and keyboardist for the iconic British band The Cure, with authorities now classifying his passing as 'unexplained'. The 65-year-old musician died at his home in Devon on Christmas Eve last year, following a protracted struggle with terminal bowel cancer.

Medical History and Family Statements

His wife, Donna, disclosed that Bamonte was first diagnosed with the aggressive disease in 2020 and received an all-clear prognosis a year later. However, she explained that the cancer recurred in 2024 and was ultimately deemed terminal prior to his death in December. Despite this clear medical timeline, police are reportedly investigating his death after receiving a report from a family member who expressed alarm over information they had been told.

Police Involvement and Family Reactions

According to reports, officers were called on January 23 this year, and authorities later confirmed the launch of a probe. Mr Bamonte's death is currently being treated as 'unexplained but not suspicious', with no implication of wrongdoing by any family member. Nevertheless, Donna has vehemently dismissed the investigation as 'bulls***', asserting unequivocally that her husband 'died of terminal bowel cancer, nothing more'.

'His doctors can confirm he was first diagnosed in 2020 and had the all-clear in 2021, but there was a recurrence in 2024,' she told The Sun. 'I have had no contact with the police since his death. This is all complete and utter nonsense.'

Conflicting Perspectives on His Health

Meanwhile, a source close to the family offered a contrasting view, claiming that while Mr Bamonte was 'poorly', he was 'not widely thought to be at death’s door'. The source added, 'After he passed, a family member was alarmed about something he had been told. It led to contact with the coroner, undertaker, and police.'

The Cure's Official Tribute

The Cure's official website confirmed the sad news, stating that the musician passed away over Christmas following a short illness. In a heartfelt statement, the band described Bamonte as 'quiet, intense, intuitive, constant and hugely creative', noting his vital role in their history. He first joined the band in 1990, contributing to albums like Wish and Wild Mood Swings, and performed over 400 shows across 14 years. After rejoining in 2022, he played another 90 concerts, culminating in a London show in November 2024.

Bamonte's Legacy with The Cure

Bamonte's association with The Cure began in 1984 as a roadie, later becoming a full-time member in 1990 after keyboardist Roger O'Donnell's departure. Although he was let go in 2005, he maintained good terms with frontman Robert Smith and returned for tours in 2022. In 2019, he and the band were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy in music history.

Devon and Cornwall Police have been contacted for further comment on the ongoing investigation.
