The city of Melbourne has been left reeling after two separate, apparently random stabbing incidents occurred within a 24-hour period, both targeting victims in broad daylight. The attacks, which involved a young childcare worker and an elderly man, have sparked significant concern and a police appeal for information.
Childcare Worker Attacked at Shopping Centre
In the first incident, a 25-year-old woman from Mount Waverley, who works in childcare, was allegedly followed onto an escalator and stabbed in the upper body at the M-City Shopping Centre on Blackburn Road in Clayton. The attack took place at approximately 7:50 am on Thursday morning, with a passer-by providing immediate assistance to the seriously injured victim.
The woman was rushed to The Alfred hospital, where she was reported to be in a serious but stable condition. The alleged perpetrator, a 16-year-old boy, fled the scene but was later taken into custody at a nearby medical centre. Police have stated that the two individuals did not know each other, indicating a random assault.
The teenager has been charged with multiple offences, including intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, assault with a weapon, possession of a controlled weapon, theft, and committing an indictable offence while on bail. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to face a children's court at a later date.
Elderly Man Stabbed During Morning Walk
Just over 24 hours later, a 71-year-old man became the victim of a second random stabbing while on his morning walk near Crighton Reserve in Port Melbourne. At around 5:20 am on Friday, the man was approached by a stranger and allegedly stabbed three times in the back.
CCTV footage captured the elderly man holding his hands to his lower back as he slowly made his way to a nearby cafe to seek help. Witness Mohammad Hassoun described the scene, noting that the victim was able to talk but had lost a significant amount of blood. Hassoun expressed shock, stating, "They done it for nothing, they didn't even try to take nothing from him, just stab and go."
The man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Police have appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the offender, describing the attack as "shocking" and noting it occurred during peak dog-walking time. The suspect is described as Caucasian, aged between 30 and 40, approximately 182cm tall, possibly with brown hair, and dressed entirely in black.
Community and Police Response
These back-to-back incidents have raised alarms about public safety in Melbourne, with both attacks appearing motiveless and occurring in busy areas. The police investigation is ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward to help apprehend the suspect in the second case.
The community has been left unsettled by the violence, particularly given the random nature of the assaults and the vulnerability of the victims. As the cases proceed through the legal system, residents are being advised to remain vigilant while authorities work to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.
