A US federal agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was tragically killed in a shooting during an operation in Chicago, authorities have confirmed.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, also resulted in the death of the suspect, a convicted felon who was illegally in possession of a firearm. The agent was part of a specialised Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) team executing a planned operation.

A Fatal Confrontation

According to a statement from ICE, the special agent was shot and fatally wounded during the incident. The agent's team returned fire, killing the armed suspect. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the deceased agent as 43-year-old Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Javier Camara.

The suspect was named by authorities as 41-year-old Michael Garfield, a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal record. A female acquaintance of the suspect was also present during the shooting but was unharmed and is currently cooperating with investigators.
