According to reports from The Associated Press, the investigation centres on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Federal authorities are examining public statements made by both men to determine if they potentially violated a federal conspiracy statute by impeding agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
This legal scrutiny follows what the Department of Homeland Security has labelled its largest enforcement operation, which saw a heavy ICE presence in Minnesota for several weeks. The operation, which led to more than 2,500 arrests, has ignited significant local controversy.
