Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has launched a scathing attack on the government, accusing ministers of turning a blind eye to the 'dangerous and lethal overcrowding' of small boats carrying migrants across the English Channel.
New figures obtained by Labour reveal alarming conditions, with some vessels carrying more than double their safe capacity. 'This is a scandal waiting to happen,' Cooper warned, pointing to the government's failure to establish safe and legal routes for asylum seekers.
A Crisis Ignored
According to the data, one boat designed for 20 people was found carrying 52 individuals – including young children. 'The Conservatives' lack of a proper plan has created this chaos,' Cooper stated. 'Their rhetoric on stopping the boats rings hollow when they're allowing such perilous crossings to continue.'
Government Under Fire
The Home Office has faced mounting criticism over its handling of the small boats crisis. Despite repeated promises to 'take back control' of Britain's borders, crossings have continued at near-record levels this year.
Cooper emphasised: 'This isn't just about numbers – it's about basic humanity. No one should be forced to risk their life in unseaworthy vessels because the government has shut down all other options.'
What Happens Next?
Labour is calling for immediate action to:
- Establish safe asylum processing routes
- Increase cooperation with French authorities
- Crack down on people smuggling networks
- Improve conditions at processing centres
With the issue set to dominate political debate in the coming weeks, pressure is mounting on the government to deliver concrete solutions rather than empty slogans.
