Former 'American Idol' Contestant's Murder Case Hearing Postponed

A preliminary hearing for Caleb Flynn, a former contestant on the television show 'American Idol' who is charged with murdering his wife, has been postponed until March 26, according to Ohio court records. The hearing was originally scheduled for today.

Flynn, 39, of Tipp City, Ohio, pleaded not guilty to the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37, who was shot with a 9mm handgun in their home on February 16. He faces charges of murder, two counts of felonious assault, and two counts of tampering with evidence. The preliminary hearing will determine if there is probable cause to proceed to trial; if so, the case will be sent to a grand jury.

Flynn's defence attorney, L. Patrick Mulligan, filed a waiver for a speedy trial and time requirements, allowing the postponement. Flynn remains held in Miami County Jail on a $2 million bond. Mulligan has questioned the thoroughness of the investigation and the high bond, stating it denies Flynn the opportunity to attend his wife's funeral.

According to the criminal complaint, Ashley Flynn was shot at around 2:30 a.m. on February 16. Caleb Flynn called 911 to report his wife was bleeding and unresponsive, and that a home intruder might still be present. Law enforcement officials later indicated the crime scene, which included signs of forced entry, appeared staged. The couple's two young daughters were home asleep and unharmed.

Ashley Flynn was a middle school girls volleyball coach and substitute teacher for Tipp City Schools. Caleb Flynn, who competed in the 2013 season of 'American Idol', has worked as a sales vice president for a commercial flooring company. In a 2013 interview, he said he loved his wife 'more than anything'.
