The man accused of the near-fatal shooting of New York Jets player Kris Boyd has made his first court appearance following a formal indictment on serious charges. Frederick Green, aged 20, stood before a judge on Wednesday, facing allegations of attempted murder, assault, and illegal weapons possession related to the violent incident in Midtown Manhattan last November.
Court Appearance and Formal Charges
Photographed wearing a standard-issue orange prison jumpsuit, Green was formally charged with one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, one count of Assault in the First Degree, and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. The indictment marks a significant step in the legal proceedings against the alleged gunman.
Details of the Shooting Incident
The altercation occurred in the early hours of November 16 outside the celebrity-frequented restaurant Sei Less. According to police reports, Boyd, aged 29, was leaving the venue with fellow Jets players Irvin Charles and Jamien Sherwood when a group of men mocked their clothing. This verbal confrontation escalated into a physical fight, during which Boyd was shot twice.
The NFL star was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Medical details released by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office reveal a fragment of the bullet entered Boyd's vein, travelled to his pulmonary artery, and ultimately lodged in one of his lungs. Two months on, Boyd is reportedly still dealing with serious medical complications from these injuries, having briefly returned to hospital after an initial discharge.
Alleged Flight and Apprehension
Prosecutors, led by Assistant District Attorney Sarah Csanadi, outlined a detailed account of Green's alleged attempts to evade capture. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the entire incident, showing Green unmasked before, during, and after the shooting. He is accused of fleeing the scene in a white BMW, eventually travelling to Buffalo, New York.
In what authorities describe as a failed bid to conceal his identity, Green allegedly cut off a significant amount of his hair, discarded his mobile phone, changed his number, and deactivated his social media accounts. He sought refuge at a female acquaintance's apartment in Buffalo. Law enforcement located him by tracking a grey Mercedes registered to his girlfriend. Upon realizing police were at the door, Green allegedly made a final attempt to escape by trying to jump out of a window before being apprehended.
Legal Context and Prior Record
District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. emphasized the severity of the case in a press statement. 'As alleged, Frederick Green fired two shots outside of a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan, nearly turning a physical altercation into a fatal one,' Bragg said. 'Gun violence has no place in Manhattan. My thoughts are with the victim who continues to heal from this near-fatal shooting.'
Court documents and reports, including from the New York Post, indicate Green has a prior criminal history. This includes four previous arrests for charges such as unlawful possession of a person's ID and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Records also show sealed juvenile arrests from 2018 for robbery and a prior bust for reckless endangerment when he was a minor.
The case continues as Green remains in custody, with the legal process unfolding for an incident that has drawn significant attention due to the victim's profile as a professional athlete and the serious nature of the alleged crimes.
