Starmer: Burnham to Play 'Big Part' in Labour Government

Sir Keir Starmer has expressed his desire for Andy Burnham to "play a big part" in the Labour Government, hinting at a possible Cabinet role for the Greater Manchester Mayor. Burnham is contesting the Makerfield by-election on Thursday, aiming to return to Westminster as an MP, and has openly harbored ambitions for Labour leadership.

Starmer's Open Invitation

Speaking to Sky News, the Prime Minister stated, "Andy is a great asset. And, yes, I want him to have a big role in government." When asked if he would call Burnham to offer a Cabinet position if he wins, Starmer replied, "Well, I'm sure I'll talk to Andy after the weekend, of course I will. I've spoken to him many times in recent weeks."

Leadership Challenges Loom

Starmer faces a potential threat from former health secretary Wes Streeting, who has indicated readiness to trigger a leadership contest as early as next week. Streeting claims to have the backing of 80 MPs required to stand, accusing Starmer of failing to listen to the party or his Cabinet.

Despite these challenges, Starmer reiterated his commitment to remain as leader, saying, "I'm not going to walk away from that, and I've been clear and consistent about that." He emphasized that the immediate priority would be the Manchester mayoral by-election should Burnham win, urging the Labour Party to focus on that contest.
