Farage Resigns as MP to Fight Clacton By-Election Amid Scrutiny Over Finances

Nigel Farage has announced he will step down as an MP to trigger a by-election in his Clacton constituency, framing it as a “people versus the establishment” battle. The Reform UK leader faces investigations over financial dealings, including a parliamentary probe into support from convicted criminal George Cottrell and a £5m gift from crypto-billionaire Christopher Harborne.

Farage claimed the investigations are politically motivated, saying: “I have done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law in any way at all.” He argued that parliamentary standards rules are being used as a political tool against Reform UK. The by-election, which other parties have said they will not contest, is expected to cost around £450,000, which Farage insists Reform UK will cover.

Political rivals have dismissed the move as a “stunt”. A Labour source said: “A political figure paying for a by-election he is standing in would clearly undermine the independence of the democratic process.” Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called on other parties to refuse participation.

Farage’s resignation suspends the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner’s investigation, but it will resume if he wins and returns to Parliament. If found in breach and suspended for more than 10 sitting days, a recall petition could trigger another by-election. Farage comfortably won Clacton in 2024 with a majority of 8,405.
