Voters across Makerfield have had their say in what could be one of the most consequential by-elections in British political history.
The Greater Manchester constituency covers the Wigan areas of Abram, Ashton-in-Makerfield South, Bryn with Ashton-in-Makerfield North, Hindley, Hindley Green, Leigh West, Orrell, Winstanley, Worsley Mesnes, and very small parts of Golborne and Lowton West, and Ince.
Labour candidate and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is hoping to return to Parliament and is expected to launch a leadership challenge against Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer if elected.
Standing in Mr Burnham's way is Reform's Rob Kenyon, who polls suggested ahead of election day was losing voters to Restore Britain's Rebecca Shepherd.
The Makerfield by-election was called after the sudden resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons on May 14. He stood down from the position to make a pathway for Mr Burnham to stand for election.
In total, there are 14 candidates running to be the new Member of Parliament in the Wigan constituency:
- Jake Austin for the Liberal Democrats
- Count Binface for Count Binface Party
- Andy Burnham for Labour and Co-operative Party
- Dan Clarke for Libertarian Party
- John Dyer for Independent
- Ed Gemmell for Climate Party
- Paul Gould - Independent
- Howling Laud Hope for The Official Monster Raving Loony Party
- Robert Kenyon for Reform UK
- Rob Pownall for Independent
- Rebecca Shepherd for Restore Britain
- Sarah Wakefield for Green Party
- Peter Ward for Rejoin EU
- Michael Winstanley for Conservative and Unionist Party
Polls closed at 10pm on Thursday, with the count starting immediately afterwards. Results for the Makerfield by-election are due from 4am on Friday morning.
