Kemi Badenoch Hails Aberdeen Win as Swipe at Andy Burnham
Badenoch Celebrates Aberdeen By-Election Victory

Kemi Badenoch has celebrated the Conservative Party's by-election victory in Aberdeen South, taking a swipe at Andy Burnham in the process. The party leader congratulated candidate Douglas Lumsden, stating, 'Makerfield was about one man's job. Aberdeen South was about thousands.'

Campaign Focus on Energy Security

The Conservative campaign heavily emphasized North Sea drilling, arguing it would secure Britain's energy needs. Badenoch remarked that Aberdonians 'know it is common sense to use our own oil and gas rather than importing it from overseas.' She also suggested many local residents voted Conservative 'because they care deeply about Aberdeen and its future' and are 'sick of the SNP's shenanigans.'

Concerns Over Labour Policies

Badenoch added that some voters were motivated by worries about Labour's impact on jobs and livelihoods. She reiterated the party's commitment to 'earn the trust of the country again' and 'fight for families, workers and business.'

Landslide Majority

Douglas Lumsden secured a majority of over 6,000 votes, defeating the SNP, who triggered the by-election after their Westminster leader moved to Holyrood. Andrew Bowie MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, called the victory 'extraordinary,' noting it was the party's first by-election win since 1967.

Bowie declared, 'We said this election was a referendum on the future of North Sea oil and gas, and Aberdeen has spoken loud and clear. Let's Get Britain Drilling Now.' He praised Lumsden as a tireless advocate for Aberdeen in Westminster.

SNP Reaction

Stephen Flynn, the SNP's Cabinet Secretary for economy, tourism and transport, acknowledged a 'tough night in Aberdeen that some will need to reflect on, quite heavily.' He expressed confidence that the SNP could reclaim the seat in 2029 'if we get things right.'
