Zelensky Reveals US June Deadline for Ukraine-Russia Peace Deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly disclosed that the United States has established a firm deadline of June for Ukraine and Russia to finalise a comprehensive peace agreement. This move aims to bring an end to the protracted conflict that has now lasted nearly four years, marking a significant diplomatic push from Washington.

US Pressure and Diplomatic Schedule

Speaking to reporters on Friday, with his comments under embargo until Saturday morning, President Zelensky provided detailed insights into the American strategy. He stated, "The Americans are proposing the parties end the war by the beginning of this summer and will probably put pressure on the parties precisely according to this schedule." He further elaborated on Washington's intentions, adding, "And they say that they want to do everything by June. And they will do everything to end the war. And they want a clear schedule of all events."

Should this June deadline not be met, the Trump administration is expected to significantly intensify pressure on both Ukraine and Russia to secure a resolution. This underscores the urgency with which the US is approaching the peace process, seeking a definitive conclusion to the ongoing hostilities.

Proposed Trilateral Talks in Miami

In a bid to advance negotiations and facilitate a breakthrough, the United States has proposed hosting the next round of trilateral talks on its soil for the first time. These discussions are likely to be held in Miami, representing a notable shift in the diplomatic venue. Kyiv has officially confirmed its participation in these upcoming talks, signalling a willingness to engage under this new framework.

This latest diplomatic initiative follows a series of unsuccessful US-brokered discussions held previously in Abu Dhabi. Those talks failed to yield any substantive breakthrough, primarily due to what were described as the belligerents' "mutually exclusive demands." The core impasse remains Russia's insistence on Ukraine's withdrawal from the fiercely contested Donbas region, a condition that Kyiv has unequivocally and repeatedly rejected.

Context of Casualties and Recent Incidents

President Zelensky's revelation regarding the US deadline comes in the wake of his earlier statement this week, in which he claimed that approximately 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have lost their lives since the onset of the war with Russia. This stark figure highlights the immense human cost of the conflict and adds a layer of urgency to the peace efforts.

Simultaneously, tensions have been further inflamed by a recent incident in Moscow. Russian state media has reported that the Kremlin has blamed Kyiv for the shooting of a senior military general, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, outside a residential building in the Russian capital. The Kremlin made this accusation without providing any immediate evidence, and Ukraine has not issued any comment regarding the attack.

The suspect is reported to have fled the scene after shooting Lieutenant General Alexeyev multiple times. The general is currently hospitalised as a result of the attack. This event underscores the persistent volatility and deep-seated animosity that characterises the broader conflict, even as diplomatic channels are being pursued.
