The US Embassy in Jerusalem has advised American citizens in Israel that while they can leave the country via taxi or shuttle, their safety cannot be guaranteed. The warning comes as Israel enters its fourth day of conflict with Iran, with widespread flight cancellations and ongoing rocket attacks.
The Israeli Ministry of Tourism has begun operating shuttles to the Taba Border Crossing with Egypt as of Monday, with registrations available via an evacuation form. However, the embassy stated it cannot recommend for or against using the shuttle, and the US government cannot guarantee the safety of those who choose to depart via this route.
The State Department had earlier included Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza in a list of regions from which Americans should 'DEPART NOW' due to serious safety risks. The list also covers Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Iran.
Twelve people have been killed in Israel and hundreds injured as Iran fires retaliatory missiles. Among the dead are three teenage siblings—Yaakov Bitton, 16, Avigail Bitton, 15, and Sarah Bitton, 13—who died when a bomb shelter collapsed in Beit Shemesh. Hezbollah is also targeting Israel from Lebanon, citing vengeance for the killing of Iran's supreme leader.
The embassy said it is not in a position to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel, and has directed all US government employees and their families to shelter in place. For those wishing to leave, limited flights are available from Egypt's Taba and Sharm al-Sheikh airports and Jordan's Queen Alia International Airport.
