Tsikhanouskaya Urges US to Maintain Pressure on Belarus Regime

In a crucial appeal to American policymakers, Belarus's leading opposition figure Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has emphasised the critical need for continued United States pressure on Alexander Lukashenko's authoritarian regime during high-stakes meetings in Washington.

The exiled leader, who has found sanctuary in Lithuania since the violently suppressed 2020 protests, warned that reducing support for Belarus's democratic movement would inevitably strengthen Lukashenko's grip on power and enable further aggression towards neighbouring Ukraine.

Strategic Meetings in Washington

Tsikhanouskaya's diplomatic mission included significant engagements with key figures including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. These discussions focused on maintaining robust sanctions against the Minsk regime and securing crucial support for Belarus's civil society and numerous political prisoners.

"This isn't merely about Belarus's freedom," Tsikhanouskaya stated during her visit. "It's about regional security and preventing Belarus from becoming a permanent satellite state for Russian military operations against Ukraine."

Concerns Over Waning Attention

The opposition leader expressed growing apprehension that international focus, particularly American attention, might be shifting away from Belarus's struggle despite ongoing human rights abuses and the regime's collaboration with Russian forces.

Her warnings come amid reports of intensified repression within Belarus, with over 1,500 political prisoners currently detained and independent media completely eradicated within the country.

The Path Forward

Tsikhanouskaya outlined several critical objectives for international supporters:

  • Sustained and strengthened economic sanctions targeting regime officials and affiliated businesses
  • Increased humanitarian support for exiled Belarusians and families of political prisoners
  • Diplomatic pressure for the immediate release of all political detainees
  • Recognition of Belarus's sovereignty against Russian assimilation efforts

The opposition leader's visit coincides with increasing concerns about Belarus's integration into Russia's strategic military framework, potentially creating permanent security threats along NATO's eastern flank.
