Norwegian political leaders have condemned US President Donald Trump's acceptance of a Nobel Peace Prize medal from Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, calling the move 'absurd' and damaging to the prize's reputation. Machado presented her medal to Trump at the White House on Thursday, citing his 'unique commitment' to Venezuela's freedom. Trump later posted on Truth Social that Machado had given him the prize 'for the work I have done'.
The Nobel Peace Center clarified that while a medal can change owners, the title of Nobel laureate cannot be transferred. The Norwegian Nobel Committee and Institute had previously stated that the prize 'cannot be revoked, shared or transferred' when Machado first revealed her plan, a position reiterated on Friday.
Kirsti Bergstø, leader of Norway's Socialist Left party, called the gesture 'absurd', noting that Trump's threats to invade Greenland demonstrate why he is not a worthy recipient. Trygve Slagsvold Vedum, leader of the Centre party, described Trump as a 'classic showoff' seeking to adorn himself with others' honours. Raymond Johansen, secretary general of Norwegian People's Aid, said the situation was 'unbelievably embarrassing and damaging' to the Nobel Peace Prize.
Machado was awarded the prize last month for her struggle against Nicolás Maduro's regime. Since then, Trump invaded Venezuela and removed Maduro, handing power to Vice-President Delcy Rodríguez. The Norwegian foreign ministry declined to comment, referring inquiries to the Nobel Committee, which did not immediately respond.
