Trump Ignores Putin's Embrace of Iran as US Enemies Align
Trump Ignores Putin-Iran Love-In as US Enemies Align

Donald Trump seems strangely unbothered as Russia embraces Iran in a very public relationship that should enrage the US president, writes world affairs editor Sam Kiley. Despite Russia's support for Iran, including intelligence sharing that has led to American casualties, Trump has downplayed the issue, saying, 'They can give all the information that they want but people they’re sending to are overwhelmed.'

Putin Welcomes Iranian Foreign Minister

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in St Petersburg on Monday, praising the strength of ties between the two countries. Iran stated that Russia had again offered to store its enriched uranium to ease Middle East tensions. A Russian superyacht, the $500 million Nord, reportedly slipped through the Strait of Hormuz last weekend.

Trump's Indifference to Military Collaboration

Trump has remained silent on Russia's close cooperation with Iran in missile technology development and nuclear power. Russian experts are still at the Bushehr nuclear facility in Iran. The US president has also lifted some restrictions on Russian oil exports, providing financial headroom amid international sanctions. Vice President JD Vance described cutting military aid to Ukraine as his 'proudest moment,' a move that pressures Kyiv to capitulate to Putin's demands.

Iran's 'United Front' Against America

Iran's ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, described the relationship as a 'united front' against America. Trump's response? 'If they want to talk, they can come to us, or they can call us. We have nice, secure lines,' he said on Fox News. However, Russian support to Iran includes advanced air-defense systems, missile accuracy advice, and satellite technology that could be used against US forces.

Trump Turns on NATO Allies

Rather than confront Russia, Trump has criticized NATO allies who have not joined his attacks on Iran alongside Israel, calling it an illegal war of aggression. His administration is considering expelling Spain from NATO and suggested the Falklands won't get protection. The only beneficiary of divisions inside NATO is Putin, and the US will suffer long-term consequences.

Only Tehran and Moscow gain from their close relationship. The US will suffer from their long embrace, yet Trump chooses to ignore it or, for reasons that remain obscure, is powerless to stop it.
