Taylor Swift Enlists Graham Norton and Show Guests for 'Opalite' Music Video

Global pop sensation Taylor Swift has unveiled a nostalgic, 1990s-inspired music video for her hit single "Opalite", revealing that she recruited her fellow guests from The Graham Norton Show – along with the host himself – to co-star in the production. The video features a star-studded ensemble including Irish actors Cillian Murphy and Domhnall Gleeson, actors Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith, and Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi, all of whom appeared alongside Swift on the popular Irish chat show last October.

Swift's Creative Spark Inspired by a Joke

In a detailed Instagram post announcing the video's release, Swift, 36, explained that the concept originated from a light-hearted remark made by Domhnall Gleeson during their appearance on Norton's programme. "When we were all talking during the broadcast, Domhnall made a light-hearted joke about wanting to be in one of my music videos," Swift recalled. "He's Irish! He was joking! Except that in that moment during the interview, I was instantly struck with an idea."

Swift elaborated that the idea "crash-landed into my imagination" while she was promoting her most recent album, "The Life of a Showgirl". Within a week, she had written a script and emailed it to Gleeson, casting him in a leading role. She then expanded the concept to include all the guests from that episode, describing it as "like a school group project but for adults and it isn't mandatory."

Plot and Cameos in the Retro-Styled Video

The music video's narrative centres on Gleeson and Swift portraying individuals trapped in unhappy relationships. Their fortunes change when they are persuaded to try a mysterious product called "Opalite", which is advertised by a grinning Cillian Murphy. This leads them to find each other and fall in love.

Lewis Capaldi appears as a mall photographer who captures images of the couple before joining in the photos himself. Meanwhile, Jodie Turner-Smith and Greta Lee make brief cameo appearances on retro-style television screens, adding to the video's nostalgic aesthetic. Swift expressed her delight that everyone accepted her invitation, stating: "I had more fun than I ever imagined – made new friends, metaphors, and fashion choices. It was an absolute thrill to create this story and these characters."

Praise for Graham Norton and Collaborative Joy

Swift also took the opportunity to praise Graham Norton, describing him as "insanely charismatic and loveable" and expressing how "lucky" she felt to be paired with such an impressive lineup on his show. She emphasised that creative inspiration can strike at any moment, noting: "My favorite part about writing is that first spark of an idea."

The "Opalite" music video is currently available exclusively on streaming platforms Spotify and Apple Music, offering fans a visually engaging complement to the song's melodic appeal. This collaborative project highlights Swift's innovative approach to music video production and her ability to transform a casual joke into a full-fledged creative endeavour.
