The Princess of Wales is set to join Prince William on a major diplomatic mission to India later this year, following the success of her recent visit to Italy. Sources have confirmed that the Princess is 'feeling inspired' and eager to accompany her husband on this significant foreign trip, which will mark their most ambitious joint overseas engagement in over four years.
Earthshot Awards and Diplomatic Engagements
The Prince and Princess of Wales are planning to attend the sixth Earthshot Awards in Mumbai, a glittering environmental prize ceremony founded by Prince William. The Princess has previously attended the awards in London in 2021 and Boston in 2022. Additionally, the couple will undertake a politically sensitive visit to the capital, Delhi, where a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to be on the agenda.
Kensington Palace aides and officials at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office believe the timing is now appropriate for the royal couple to embark on their largest joint venture since their tour of the Caribbean in 2022. The King and Queen's successful State Visit to the United States earlier this month has also bolstered confidence in the mission.
Renewed Energy After Italy Visit
Following a two-day visit to Reggio Emilia in Italy, where the Princess conducted research on early childhood development, she returned home 'full of excitement.' Thousands of well-wishers greeted her in the main square and at various locations, including schools, cooking clubs, and a recycling plant. A royal source described the Princess as 'blown away' by the reception and feeling 'well and energised.'
The Princess is expected to participate in more foreign visits this year as she continues to promote the work of the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Development globally. Her visit to Italy reinforced her belief in the importance of protecting human connection from the earliest years of life in an increasingly digital world.
Historical Context and Future Plans
The Prince and Princess of Wales previously undertook a successful week-long royal tour of India and Bhutan in April 2016, which strengthened ties between Britain and India. Their engagements included visits to Mumbai, New Delhi, Kaziranga National Park in Assam, and the Taj Mahal in Agra.
A planned royal tour to India by the then Prince Charles and Camilla in 2022 was cancelled following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Since then, the mission was deemed diplomatically sensitive due to India's close ties with Russia amid the war in Ukraine. However, the Foreign Office now considers the time right for the future king and queen to undertake this tour.
While there have been reports of a potential trip to the United States for the 250th anniversary of American Independence in July, royal sources insist no invitation has been received. Prince William is more likely to travel to the US alone if England reaches the World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19.
