Michael B Jordan won the best actor Oscar at the 2026 Academy Awards for his role in Sinners, becoming only the sixth black actor to receive the honour. He joins an exclusive list including Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Denzel Washington and Sidney Poitier, who won in 1964 for Lilies of the Field.
Jordan's victory came as a surprise to many, as Timothée Chalamet had been the frontrunner after winning the Golden Globe. However, Jordan's win at the Actors awards hinted at his momentum. At 39, Jordan has built a career spanning both commercial blockbusters and critically acclaimed films, from The Wire to Creed and Black Panther.
In his acceptance speech, Jordan thanked his cast and acknowledged the five black actors who preceded him. He said, 'I know you guys want me to do well. And I want to do that because you guys bet on me, so thank you for keeping betting on me.'
Jordan's journey began in Newark, New Jersey, where he was bullied for sharing a name with basketball legend Michael Jordan. His mother Donna supported his acting ambitions from age 11. A former drama teacher recalled his early focus: 'He’d ask me, “How can I do better at an audition?” He was a tremendous worker.'
Jordan's breakthrough came as Wallace in The Wire, followed by a standout performance in Fruitvale Station. His collaboration with director Ryan Coogler has spanned five films, including the Creed series and Black Panther. Sinners grossed over £300m globally, outperforming rival One Battle After Another.
