Kevin Keegan Targeted by 'Sick' Social Media Hoax Amid Cancer Battle

A malicious social media post falsely claiming that Liverpool icon Kevin Keegan has only days to live has been exposed as a "sick" hoax. The 75-year-old football legend was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year after being hospitalised with abdominal symptoms, sparking an outpouring of support from fans and clubs alike.

Family and Club Statements Confirm Diagnosis

In January, Keegan's family released a statement detailing his condition, stating: "Kevin was recently admitted to hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms. These investigations have revealed a diagnosis of cancer, for which Kevin will undergo treatment." The family emphasised their request for privacy during this challenging period.

Newcastle United, where Keegan both played and managed, also issued a supportive message: "Our former player and manager, Kevin Keegan will undergo treatment after being diagnosed with cancer having been admitted to hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms. King Kev. We're with you every step of the way. Hoping for a full and speedy recovery."

Fake Statement Debunked by TV Presenter

A fabricated statement recently surfaced on Facebook, purportedly from Keegan, saying: "Sad news from Kevin Keegan: 'I don't have much time left... I just want to be at peace with my loved ones in these final days.'" TV presenter Pete Graves quickly took to X, formerly Twitter, to verify that this was a hoax.

Graves wrote: "I can confirm that this statement is fake and not true. Kevin's treatment is underway and he is responding well! I'd like to remind everyone the family have requested privacy at this time. Kevin has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of well wishes and kindness from fans around the world."

Outrage from Supporters Over Hoax

Fans of the football legend have expressed fury at the hoax, branding those responsible as "sick" and "vile." One supporter commented: "What kind of person puts something like that out? Sick." Another added: "There are some vile people out there that make stories up just for likes." A third stated: "Why can't people just leave him to fight this? Absolutely disgusting coming out with stuff like this. I hope KK makes a full and swift recovery. A proper legend!"

Keegan's Illustrious Football Career

Kevin Keegan, hailing from Doncaster, enjoyed a storied career in football. He spent six seasons at Liverpool, winning three league titles and the European Cup. He also earned 63 caps for England and managed the national team at Euro 2000.

At Newcastle United, Keegan delivered promotion as a player between 1982 and 1984, retiring with a helicopter send-off. He returned as manager in 1992, rescuing the club from potential financial ruin and dropping into the third division. Recently, it was disclosed that figures like Alan Shearer and Ant and Dec are supporting efforts for a statue of Keegan at St James' Park.

The football community continues to rally behind Keegan as he undergoes treatment, with hopes for a full recovery amidst this distressing hoax incident.
