Strictly Champion Karen Carney Opens Up About Autism Spectrum and Transformational Journey
Strictly Come Dancing winner Karen Carney has candidly discussed her experience on the autism spectrum, revealing how it affected her performance on the hit BBC show. The former England and Arsenal footballer, who lifted the glitter ball trophy with professional partner Carlos Gu in December, explained that certain production elements had to be adjusted to accommodate her sensory needs.
Sensory Challenges and Lighting Adjustments
Speaking about her time on the show, the 38-year-old athlete detailed how the bright studio lighting proved overwhelming during certain routines. "For the salsa, the lighting was too much for both me and Carlos," Carney revealed. "We're probably on a spectrum - I am - so a lot of lights, not good. So they lower the lighting system and try and make it a little bit better for us to perform."
This revelation adds another layer to Carney's previous openness about her physical challenges, including Scheuermann's disease, a spinal condition that impacted her posture during certain dances. Her willingness to discuss both physical and neurological differences highlights the diverse challenges contestants face in the high-pressure entertainment environment.
From Awkward Silence to Matching Tattoos
Despite their eventual victory and deep friendship, Carney described an initially awkward meeting with her professional partner Carlos Gu that left her struggling to find common ground. "When we first met we had nothing in common. Nothing," she laughed during a London event. "Honestly, the conversation was so awkward. I've just met him and I go: 'Do you like football?' He went: 'No, never been to football, don't watch football, no interest in it.'"
The football star recalled attempting to break the ice with television preferences, only to discover Gu was a fan of Downton Abbey, a show she had never seen. "I sat in silence for 10 minutes thinking, 'I don't know what to do here,'" Carney admitted. "So yeah, we're totally different personalities. I saw this flamboyant, very extra human being, and I'm quite shy, quite reserved."
Their relationship has since blossomed to such an extent that the pair recently got matching tattoos of hearts and butterflies. What began as a joking pledge if they won the competition became reality after their December victory, despite early predictions from show professionals that Carney would be eliminated in the initial weeks.
Confidence Transformation and Addressing Online Abuse
Carney credits both the Strictly experience and her partnership with the 33-year-old Gu with helping her overcome significant confidence issues that emerged after her retirement from professional football. "When I retired, I always knew I was a footballer, but I forgot I was a Lioness," she explained, referencing her role as an England international. "I've been crushed quite a lot. He used to go: 'You're a Lioness - believe in yourself.' He made me start to believe in myself a little bit more and value myself more and I'll be forever grateful to him."
The couple's choice dance to Lady Gaga's Born This Way served as a deliberate response to the social media trolling Carney endured after transitioning from player to pundit. Microphones featured prominently in their set design as a symbolic nod to the abuse she faced. "I said to Strictly - that stuff has knocked me," Carney sighed. "The show made me get over that trauma, so that was a big big moment. I've never felt more included and supported in all my life."
Emotional Moments and Lasting Memories
Among her most cherished memories is the waltz that moved her to tears, particularly when she first wore the elaborate dress designed for the routine. The BBC recently gifted her the garment, which now holds pride of place in her home. "It was such an emotional reaction because I knew the level of detail the team had gone to to make me feel like a princess, and I'm a footballer," Carney shared. "They gifted it to me the other day. So I have that dress at home now."
Another standout performance was the Argentine tango set to the Peaky Blinders theme music, which showcased her dramatic development throughout the competition.
Currently appearing in the Strictly live tour alongside Gu until 16 February, Carney reflects on her experience as profoundly transformative. "I love the show and am just so grateful for it," she concluded. "It was incredible, life changing. I am just enjoying the happiness it gave me." Her journey from initial sensory challenges and awkward introductions to championship victory and lasting friendship illustrates the unexpected personal transformations possible through entertainment participation.
