Iran Threatens Regional War Over US Attack, Labels EU Armies as Terrorist Groups
Iran Warns of Regional War if US Attacks, Calls EU Armies Terrorists

Iran has delivered a stark warning that any military attack by the United States could trigger widespread regional warfare, dramatically escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. In a retaliatory diplomatic move, Tehran has officially designated European Union armies as "terrorist groups," marking a significant deterioration in international relations.

Military Buildup and Diplomatic Standoff

The United States has substantially increased its naval presence in the region, deploying six destroyers, one aircraft carrier, and three littoral combat ships to Middle Eastern waters. This military buildup follows repeated threats from President Donald Trump regarding intervention over Iran's nuclear programme and the government's handling of domestic protests.

Despite the heightened military posture and inflammatory rhetoric, both Iranian leadership and the Trump administration have indicated a willingness to resume diplomatic negotiations. Regional allies including Turkey are actively pursuing de-escalation efforts to prevent the situation from spiralling into open conflict.

Khamenei's Defiant Stance

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addressed the growing tensions through state media channels, dismissing American military posturing as ineffective intimidation. "The Iranian nation shall not be scared by these things, the Iranian people will not be stirred by these threats," Khamenei declared, referring to the US naval deployments.

The Supreme Leader emphasised Iran's defensive posture while warning of severe retaliation against any aggressor. "We are not the initiators and do not want to attack any country, but the Iranian nation will strike a strong blow against anyone who attacks and harasses them," he stated unequivocally.

Protest Crackdown and International Response

The current crisis follows Iran's deadly suppression of nationwide protests in January, which began as demonstrations against economic hardship but evolved into the most significant political challenge to the Islamic Republic since its 1979 establishment. While official figures report 3,117 protest-related deaths, the US-based HRANA rights group has verified 6,713 fatalities, though Reuters notes these numbers cannot be independently confirmed.

In response to the protest crackdown, the European Union designated Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation last Thursday. Iran retaliated on Sunday with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf announcing that EU armies would receive reciprocal terrorist designations, with authorities considering the expulsion of EU military attachés.

"By trying to hit the Revolutionary Guards... the Europeans actually shot themselves in the foot," Qalibaf told lawmakers during a parliamentary session where all members wore IRGC uniforms in solidarity with the elite force. Following his address, legislators chanted "Death to America, Shame on you Europe" in a show of nationalist fervour.

Negotiation Prospects and Military Options

President Trump revealed on Saturday that Iran was "seriously talking" with Washington about potential negotiations, hours after Tehran's top security official Ali Larijani indicated that arrangements for talks were underway via social media platform X. Trump expressed hope for a diplomatic resolution, stating: "I hope they negotiate something acceptable. You could make a negotiated deal that would be satisfactory with no nuclear weapons."

Meanwhile, Reuters has reported that the Trump administration is considering targeted strikes against Iranian security forces among various military options. Tehran maintains it is prepared for "fair" negotiations that do not compromise its defensive capabilities.

In a separate development, an Iranian official denied state media reports suggesting Revolutionary Guards naval forces would conduct live-fire exercises in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz this Sunday and Monday, dismissing such claims as incorrect information.
