In a refreshingly honest moment on Tuesday's episode of I'm A Celebrity, viewers praised Ashley James for openly admitting that having children is not currently a top priority for her. The 39-year-old Pussycat Doll was quizzed by fellow campmate Sinitta, 62, about her future plans for motherhood, sparking a wider conversation about personal choices and fertility struggles within the camp.
A Candid Exchange on Motherhood
When Sinitta, who has two adopted children, asked Ashley if being a mum was on the cards, Ashley responded with refreshing clarity. She explained, 'It's not the top of the list. I don't know, I think I've just been so driven and I like travelling and I don't feel a strong passion to be a mum.' Sinitta, offering her perspective, noted, 'I always say to people unless you really, really want to because it takes everything, doesn't it.'
Scarlett Moffatt's Fertility Journey
This conversation prompted Scarlett Moffatt, 35, to share her own experiences with fertility struggles while trying to conceive her son Jude, now two. Scarlett, engaged to former police officer Scott Dobinson, revealed, 'Me and Scott, we tried for four years to have Jude, it took so long. And then the day we found out I was pregnant, the day after we were going to a fertility clinic.' She emphasized the commonality of such challenges, adding, 'That happens to loads of people. I think it's because you feel like not stressed but because you think it's going to get sorted.'
Scarlett further reflected on societal pressures, stating, 'I feel like then when you have one kid, everyone goes to you: "Are you having another?" And I always feel like going: "I would love to but it just sometimes doesn't work out that way". Happy that I just have this one.' In the Bush Telegraph, she expressed support for diverse life choices, saying, 'For other women it isn't and I think, good for Ashley, same as good for me who wanted a child. We all just have to live our best lives however that looks.'
Viewer Reactions on Social Media
Viewers took to X, formerly Twitter, to applaud the open dialogue. One wrote, 'Absolutely, some people make a choice not to have children. That's fine too. Let's not shame Ashley for not having kids on top of her list. I say fair play to her.' Others highlighted broader societal issues, with comments like, 'People can't afford to have kids these days,' and 'I feel like as a society we put too much pressure on women to have kids.'
Scarlett's Previous Fertility Disclosure
Scarlett had previously discussed her difficulties on Giovanna Fletcher's Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast. She recalled, 'We were trying for a long time. I think a lot of women do this. I self-diagnosed myself, like, "Maybe I can’t have children, because it isn’t happening..." We booked to see a fertility doctor to check to see that everything was OK.' In a heartwarming turn, she shared, 'That was for November, and on my birthday in October I remember blowing my birthday candles out and wishing that it would happen, like, "I really wish that I could have a baby". Then two weeks later I found out that I was pregnant. It was a nice feeling emailing the fertility doctor, cancelling the appointment.'
The episode underscored the importance of honest conversations about parenting choices and fertility, resonating deeply with audiences who appreciated the campmates' vulnerability and authenticity.
