Greg James Tells Mum About Prince William's Comic Relief Surprise

Radio 1 Breakfast DJ Greg James has shared a deeply touching moment from his ongoing Comic Relief fundraising challenge, revealing the heartwarming conversation he had with his mother after being joined by Prince William on his tandem bicycle. The 40-year-old broadcaster is currently cycling 1000 kilometres over eight days to raise money for charity, and received a royal surprise on Tuesday when the Prince of Wales unexpectedly hopped on the back of his bike.

Emotional Family Connection Amidst Gruelling Challenge

In a sweet clip that has since circulated, Greg can be seen ringing his mother Rosemary to share the extraordinary news that Britain's future king had joined him for part of his journey. During the call, Greg humorously instructed his mother to tell his father Alan, who remains hospitalised recovering from a stroke, that he "didn't kill the future King." This lighthearted moment comes against the backdrop of genuine family concern, as Greg's father suffered a stroke during a planned heart operation just one week before the cycling challenge began.

Masking Emotions While Pushing Through

The radio star had earlier revealed on his show that he has been "masking his emotions" regarding his father's health battle while completing the physically demanding trek. Having completed the fifth day of his challenge, Greg confessed there have been moments where he's "wanted to sit in a room and cry for a bit," as he's "really missed" his parents and wished they could be there to support him during this significant undertaking.

Speaking candidly on Radio 1, Greg explained: "Someone said to me, 'just be honest with how you're feeling?' and I went 'I have been' and I will continue to be, but how I've been feeling is also, you can sort of mask that a little bit, with lots of the joy that I'm seeing. And that is overriding, at the moment all of that is overriding how horrible I actually feel, about not only my body, but also how sad I've been the last few weeks."

Royal Surprise and Comic Relief Fundraising Success

The unexpected appearance of Prince William provided both comic relief and significant fundraising momentum to Greg's challenge. The quick-witted Prince of Wales, 43, surprised Greg by hopping on the rear saddle for a 30-minute ride through the South Yorkshire countryside before informing the presenter that he had already raised more than £1 million for Comic Relief through his efforts.

During their ride together, the pair shared several humorous exchanges that delighted royal observers. At one point, when Greg excitedly shouted to a group of children that Prince William was on his bike, the future king quipped: "It's a lookalike! They just think you've lost it. He's hallucinating!" This playful banter continued when Greg asked if William felt safe on the tandem, to which the prince responded: "I do. I think you're in control."

Royal Encouragement and National Spirit

Beyond providing comic moments, Prince William offered genuine encouragement to Greg during this gruelling part of the challenge. The prince told him: "What you've done is set an example about helping out. That's the thing. It's volunteering some of your time, putting yourself through a bit of pain at the same time, and supporting others. It's something we do very well in this country, but we don't really shout about it enough. This challenge helps everyone see that. And it's an amazing team effort. Huge well done, Greg."

Greg later described finding the future king on the back of his tandem as an "incredible surprise," noting: "I'd joked when I recorded a recent radio show with him that he was very welcome to turn up and do a stint on the tandem but I didn't think he'd actually call my bluff. Completely bizarre but so kind of him to spend some time amplifying our message of making sure we look after the most vulnerable people in society."

Family Support and Public Response

Throughout the emotional phone call with his mother, Greg maintained his characteristic humour while clearly drawing strength from family connections. As Rosemary shared she was on her way to visit his father in hospital, the DJ said: "Right tell him... tell him that Prince William was on the back of the bike, and I didn't fall off and I haven't killed the future King. Tell him that from me." To which his mother proudly replied: "I will, oh you amazing boy."

The public response to both Greg's challenge and the royal surprise has been overwhelmingly positive. Royal fans took to social media to praise the "amazing" moment between the unlikely pair, with one commenting: "No pressure riding with the future King onboard!" while another fondly described William as a "classy prince." A third supporter shared: "Absolutely love this! Go Greg and Wills," reflecting the widespread admiration for both the fundraising effort and the royal participation.

Continuing the Challenge with Renewed Purpose

As Greg continues his remaining days of cycling from Weymouth to Edinburgh, he does so with the knowledge that his efforts have already raised substantial funds for Comic Relief ahead of Red Nose Day on March 20. The challenge has seen him cheered on by fellow broadcasters including Vernon Kay, Sara Cox, Jo Whiley and Scott Mills, though the appearance of the Prince of Wales was certainly the most unexpected support.

Reflecting on the emotional journey, Greg shared during day two of his cycle that he became overwhelmed as he neared the finish line, thinking about his beloved father "big Al." He said: "I feel elated. I feel a bit overwhelmed by all these people who just turned up out of nowhere. I just burst into tears as I was going up to Blaenavon. It was all a bit much. And then I think Sam and Danny were playing Aperture, and it just got a bit much for me. Just thought about... I just thought about everything. Just thought about my dad, thought about my mum. It got way too much. It's so silly. It must have been the altitude."

This blend of personal vulnerability, family connection, royal surprise, and charitable determination has created a compelling narrative that continues to capture public attention as Greg James pedals toward Edinburgh, raising both funds and awareness for Comic Relief's vital work.
