Tyson Fury has reflected on the tragic death of his uncle Hughie Fury while making a major health decision in the latest season of his Netflix documentary series, At Home With the Furys.
In the second season, now streaming, the heavyweight champion grapples with retirement and a persistent rotator cuff injury from a previous fight. After an MRI scan, doctors advised surgery, warning he 'may never fight again' without it. However, his father John Fury cautioned against the procedure, citing what happened to his brother Hughie.
Hughie Fury, Tyson's uncle and former coach, died in October 2014 at age 50. He had sustained a leg injury when a caravan drawbar fell on his leg in July 2014. After initial treatment with a plaster cast, he underwent surgery to insert a metal plate, but his heart stopped during the operation due to a blood clot. He remained in a coma for 11 weeks before passing away. An inquest recorded accidental death due to bronchial pneumonia from a pulmonary embolism and cardiac arrest.
Tyson previously paid tribute to his uncle on social media, sharing a photo of himself outside a caravan and recalling his early training days. The documentary explores how this family loss influences his current health choices.
