The 78th Annual Directors Guild Awards honoured the creative visionaries behind the camera this past Saturday in Los Angeles, with Paul Thomas Anderson's black comedy action thriller One Battle After Another claiming the evening's most prestigious accolade. Paul Thomas Anderson's critically acclaimed project One Battle After Another earned the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film award. The film, which boasts an ensemble cast featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn, and Chase Infiniti, has also garnered an impressive thirteen Academy Award nominations ahead of the upcoming Oscars ceremony in March.

In a memorable moment, Leonardo DiCaprio made a surprise appearance at the awards ceremony to present Anderson with the Directors Guild of America Feature Film Medallion. Taking to the stage, DiCaprio reflected on finally collaborating with Anderson, remarking, "What struck me most about his process is how precise and fearless it is. Paul has an incredible barometer for bulls***."

The Oscar-winning actor elaborated on Anderson's directorial approach, noting, "He knows instantly when an idea isn't right, has no problem telling you exactly how wrong," before humorously adding, "Including some of my ideas." DiCaprio further praised Anderson's unique ability to "find the mystery, to uncover something that keeps us unsettled, curious and completely alive as viewers."

Additional Honours and Celebrated Winners

The evening celebrated achievements across numerous cinematic categories. Timothee Chalamet, dressed in a distinguished double-breasted brown suit, honoured his Marty Supreme director Josh Safdie with a medallion. Both Chalamet and Safdie have received Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Director respectively for the sports drama, which has earned widespread critical praise since its theatrical release late last year.

Jacob Elordi presented a DGA Award to his Frankenstein director Guillermo Del Toro, speaking warmly of the filmmaker's generosity. "He gives his heart and time to his fellow artists and being in his presence for even a brief moment, you can feel the magnitude of his generosity," Elordi stated, concluding with the affectionate remark, "Guillermo, you are the greatest friend a monster could have."

Further notable presentations included Michael B. Jordan honouring his Sinners director Ryan Coogler, while Amanda Marsalis won Outstanding Directorial Achievement for the episode "6:00 P.M." from the hit medical series The Pitt. The show had previously secured two Golden Globes in January.

Television and Special Category Recognitions

The awards also highlighted excellence in television direction. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg received the DGA for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Comedy Series for their Apple TV+ series The Studio, specifically for the episode titled The Oner. The satirical comedy, co-created by Rogen, recently triumphed at the Golden Globes, winning Best TV Series - Musical or Comedy along with Best Actor for Rogen.

Liz Patrick, the current director of Saturday Night Live, was honoured with the Best Variety award for SNL50: The Anniversary Special. Meanwhile, Mike Sweeney won Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Reality/Quiz & Game for Conan O'Brien Must Go, cheerfully posing for photos alongside D'Arcy Carden and Kerri Kenney-Silver after his win.

Shannon Murphy secured the directorial award for Best Limited and Anthology Series for Dying For Sex, the Hulu comedic drama miniseries starring Michelle Williams. Olivia Wilde presented in a black leather dress, appearing alongside Charlie Polinger, who won the Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film for the horror drama The Plague.

Documentary, Commercial, and Special Achievement Awards

The documentary categories saw Rebecca Miller win Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary Series/News for Mr. Scorsese, "All This Filming Isn't Healthy." Mstyslav Chernov received the DGA in the Documentary Film category for 2000 Meters to Andriivka.

Kim Gehrig earned the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials for her work on Nike's You Can't Win. So Win. and Apple's I'm Not Remarkable campaigns. Stephen Chbosky was recognized for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television for Netflix's Nonnas.

David Charles accepted the Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award, honouring extraordinary service to the profession and the DGA. The Sports category award went to Matthew Gangl for his direction of 2025 World Series – Game 7 – Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Toronto Blue Jays on Fox Sports.

The ceremony also featured appearances by Adam Scott, Rhea Seehorn, and Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan, who addressed attendees while preparing for his upcoming film The Odyssey starring Matt Damon and Zendaya. The 78th Annual Directors Guild Awards successfully celebrated the diverse and exceptional talent shaping contemporary cinema and television.
