Harrowing Details Emerge from Deadliest Catch Tragedy That Claimed Todd Meadows

New and distressing details have surfaced regarding the tragic death of Deadliest Catch star Todd Meadows, who lost his life in the sub-zero waters of the Bering Sea on February 25. The 25-year-old fisherman fell overboard from Captain Rick Shelford's Aleutian Lady fishing vessel, despite a desperate rescue attempt by his crewmates that ultimately proved unsuccessful.

The Desperate Rescue Attempt

Deckhand Trey John Green III, aged 30, provided a chilling account of the incident to Page Six, describing how a rescue harness snapped as the crew fought to save the young fisherman. "We did everything we could," Green emphasized, detailing how Meadows was in the frigid water for approximately three to four minutes before crew members managed to retrieve him back onto the boat.

By the time Meadows was pulled from the water, Green reported he was already "turning blue" with foam emerging from his mouth and nose. The crew immediately began performing CPR, continuing their resuscitation efforts for a full 45 minutes before Captain Shelford made the difficult decision to halt the rescue attempts.

Multiple Camera Angles Captured the Tragedy

The entire incident was reportedly captured from multiple angles by Discovery Channel cameras filming for Season 22 of the reality series. "There's multiple angles. I mean, they got everything," Green alleged, noting that the footage documented the crew's frantic efforts to save their colleague.

Green described the rescue sequence in detail: "When Steve jumped in the water, the harness that was attached to the crane actually broke." Steve Porter, the vessel's designated rescue swimmer, had been geared up and ready for exactly this type of emergency scenario. After the harness failure, desperate crew members scrambled to deploy a life sling attached to the vessel's crane.

The Failed Recovery Efforts

With Porter's assistance, Meadows managed to get into the sling and was "halfway up" and "almost back on the boat" when he fell back into the water. Green noted that by the second recovery attempt, Meadows was "lifeless" and no longer fighting to survive as he had during the initial rescue effort.

The crew used an AED machine—a portable automated defibrillator—during their resuscitation attempts, but "nothing was working." After 45 minutes of continuous CPR, Captain Shelford told the crew, "Guys, it's not gonna work." Meadows's body was subsequently wrapped in a tarp and placed in a freezer to preserve it.

Unusual Weather Conditions and Safety Concerns

Green described the typically treacherous Bering Sea as "flat" and "calm" on that fateful day, with "actually good" weather conditions. The incident occurred in late afternoon with the sun still out and high visibility. However, the water temperature was only "a degree or two above freezing" with outside temperatures below freezing.

Green also revealed that Meadows was not wearing a lifejacket at the time of the incident, adding that none of the crew typically wear them. "On this boat, we don't wear lifejackets," Green explained. "When you're working 18, 20 hours a day, it's just another piece of gear, and it's just a hassle."

Previous Injury and Family Requests

In a separate development, it was reported that Meadows had allegedly suffered a traumatic brain injury at work just weeks before his untimely death. According to TMZ, Meadows's mother Angela said her son had taken a blow to the head about a month earlier while on the Aleutian Lady and was diagnosed with a concussion.

Meadows was flown back to Washington to recover for approximately one week—the final time his family saw him before his death. His mother has stated that the family does not place blame on Deadliest Catch for the concussion but has requested that Discovery Channel not air any footage of the fatal incident.

"We don't want to see any footage from the accident and do not want Discovery to air any of that footage or make money off of our son's death," Angela Meadows told TMZ. "We hope they only air good things of Todd on that boat." Instead, the family has asked for clips of Todd crabbing at sea to remember him doing what he loved.

Investigation and Aftermath

The U.S. Coast Guard is still investigating the incident to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Meadows's death. Green alleged that Meadows went overboard after an incident with one of the vessel's shellfish pots—a type of fishing trap commonly used in the industry.

Meadows leaves behind three young sons, and a GoFundMe campaign launched to support them has already raised more than $48,000. Season 22 of Deadliest Catch has completed filming, with The Aleutian Lady being the last of the vessels featured still at sea. The vessel and Captain Shelford have been featured on the Discovery Channel reality series from seasons 19 to 21 from 2023 to 2025.
