The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Cyprus, warning that terror attacks 'cannot be ruled out' on the island. The alert follows a suspected drone strike on the RAF Akrotiri airbase on 2 March 2026, which caused minimal damage and no casualties.
The attack, believed to involve an Iranian-designed drone, has raised concerns that the Middle East conflict could spill closer to Europe. RAF Akrotiri is the UK's largest overseas airbase and has been used for operations against ISIS and Houthi targets.
The FCDO advised British nationals to remain vigilant and noted that regional escalation poses significant security risks, potentially leading to travel disruption. Officials also urged those in British sovereign base areas to follow instructions from the Sovereign Base Areas Administration.
Cyprus remains a popular holiday destination for UK travellers, with tourist areas operating normally. However, the FCDO stressed that no travel can be guaranteed safe and recommended signing up for government travel alerts.
